Fun Facts

Located at 312-13 Godeok-dong, Gangdong-gu, Seoul, South Korea, is a 100-year-old Zelkova tree. As a venerable tree, it adds to the picturesque scenery that characterizes Godeok-dong. Standing at 16 meters tall with a circumference of 1.2 meters, it is believed to have originally grown in a hillock, but due to apartment construction, small parks, and road development, its growth space has become restricted. To ensure its stability, the thickest branches are supported with braces to prevent them from falling due to wind or weight.

Legend has it that in Godeok-ri, there's a story cautioning against pretending to be good at writing. Historically, Godeok-ri was home to many literati and scholars such as Hamburim from the late Goryeo to early Joseon period, Park Eun, a scholar from early Joseon, and scholar Eo Hyo-cheom from mid-Joseon. They were renowned for their excellence in poetry and prose, and their fame is intertwined with the history of the tree.

Local authorities in Gangdong-gu, along with community organizations, are dedicated to preserving the Godeok-dong Zelkova tree. Efforts include regular maintenance, monitoring for diseases and pests, and engaging the community in conservation activities to ensure the tree remains a vibrant part of Godeok-dong for future generations.
